Over the last few years, more and more men are adding pearls to their accessory and jewelry collections. However, this is not a new concept, they’ve been worn throughout history. In fact, pearls can be traced back thousands of years ago - before written history. Pearls have symbolized many concepts, including power, prosperity, wisdom, luck, purity, and safety, and have held “magical powers” for Emperors, Maharajas and other historical figures of royalty.
While pearls are a well-known gemstone, other gemstones - such as diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, form as minerals underground, whereas pearls are organic (formed in mollusks in fresh and salt water), which add to their appeal. Actually, a pearl is a true “gem”… not a stone.
If you are accenting a monochromatic ensemble or multiple flashy tones - pearls seem to be the perfect complement - may even be replacing the traditional tie. So, who has been seen wearing pearls - the natural gem? Tom Hanks, Elton John, Sterling K. Brown, Harry Styles, Jaden Smith, Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, Pharrell Williams, Billy Porter, Shawn Mendez - and the list goes on and on. Whether for fashion or to support women and women’s projects - pearls are now adorned in stick pins, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pocket chains, belts, etc. From the beach to the boardroom - pearls work!
Pearls come in all shapes - spherical (round/nearly round), symmetrical (oval, drop and button), or baroque (non-symmetric and/or irregular), colors (ranging from white and cream, to pink, green, purple, and blue, to silver, grey and black) and sizes (ranging from 2mm - 18mm). While there is no official, international grading system, several grading scales are often accepted, with factors that include luster, shape, color, size, imperfections, and how well they match each other.
